As a home inspector, I'm a firm believer in empowering homeowners with the knowledge they need to keep their homes safe and well-maintained. So, grab your notepad and flashlight, because we're about to dive into the world of DIY home inspections!

1. Roofing TLC

  • Your roof is your home's first line of defense. Inspect it for missing or damaged shingles, signs of leaks, and ensure your gutters are clear.

    2. Windows and Doors

  • Check for drafts around windows and doors. Replace weather stripping if needed to keep your home comfortable and energy-efficient.

3. The Foundation Checkup

  • Examine your foundation for cracks or signs of settling. These could indicate structural issues that need professional attention.

4. Electrical System Safety

  • Test your outlets and switches, and replace any that are loose or damaged. Check your electrical panel for signs of overheating or tripped breakers.

5. Plumbing Perfection

  • Inspect under sinks and around toilets for any signs of leaks. Make sure your water heater is free of rust or corrosion.

6. HVAC Health

  • Change your air filters regularly, and ensure your HVAC system is running smoothly. A well-maintained system keeps your home cozy and your energy bills in check.

7. Crawl Space and Attic Adventures

  • Take a peek into your crawl space and attic for any signs of moisture, pests, or insulation issues.

8. Fire Safety

  • Test your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors to ensure they're in working order. Replace batteries as needed.

9. Be Pest-Prepared

  • Look for any signs of pest infestations like droppings, chewed wires, or nests. Address these issues promptly.

10. Inspection with a Professional

  • While you can do a lot yourself, don't forget the power of a professional inspection. Experts can uncover hidden issues and provide valuable recommendations for improvements.
